15th Anniversary Gala a Success!

OSTA-AECO held its 15th Annual Student Trustee Alumni Leadership Awards Gala May 27, 2016 at the Omni King Edward Hotel. Attended by past, current, and future student trustees, the event was filled with excitement from the moment hors d’oeuvres were served. The evening featured the presentation of the Ontario Student Voice Awards (OSVAs), the Student Trustee Alumni Leadership Awards, and a keynote presentation delivered by Laurentian University President and Vice-Chancellor Dominic Giroux.

The Board of Directors would like to congratulate the recipients of the 2016 Student Trustee Alumni Leadership Awards, Polly Van Herpt of the Limestone District School Board and Hannah Tobias-Murray of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. Both recipients have accomplished phenomenal feats in their schools, boards, and greater community and are well deserving of the merit. The Board of Directors would like to thank all applicants and look forward to awarding next year’s recipients.

This year’s Gala was made possible by the work of multiple individuals and organizations. A sincere thank you goes out to all those who made the evening possible, most notably the Board’s Director of Logistics Jennifer Williams for the countless hours spent planning this year’s Gala. We thank all alumni who attended and look forward to seeing you all at our next social event!

15th Anniversary Alumni Gala

The board of directors continually strives to commemorate the accomplishments of student leaders across the province. One of the ways we do this is through OSTA-AECO’s annual Student Trustee Alumni Leadership Awards Gala.

The gala is held each year to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of student trustees across the province. Student trustees work tirelessly to engage with their student constituents, the broader school communities in which they work, and with their respective school boards.

2016 marks the fifteenth anniversary of the Ontario Student Trustees’ Association. This year’s Gala will look back on our successes and challenges—and ultimately, how we have evolved to become who we now are.

The Student Trustee Alumni Leadership Awards Gala will be held on May 27, 2016 at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto. The evening will begin with a reception, followed by a plated dinner, networking dessert, award ceremonies, and a keynote speaker. We will be selling two ticket options this year, one for the entire evening, and one for the networking dessert portion of the evening.

Additionally, the Alumni Network also awards two $1,000 scholarships toward the pursuit of post-secondary education to outgoing Student Trustees who have demonstrated exemplary leadership, innovation, cooperation, and perseverance.

We truly hope to see as many alumni as possible in attendance! If you have any questions, please contact jennifer.williams@directors.osta-aeco.org.

Changes to the OSTA-AECO Board of Directors and Alumni Network

On May 23rd, 2015, the Ontario Student Trustees’ Association/l’Association des élèves conseillers et conseillères de l’Ontario (OSTA-AECO) passed an amendment to the organization’s constitution to amalgamate the Board of Directors and Alumni Board of Directors into a single entity comprised of seven (7) Directors as of August 1st, 2015. This recent transition comes at a time in which the organization is undergoing many significant changes to improve the ways in which the student voice is heard within the education system.

As the largest student-run organization in Canada, representing over two million students across the province, OSTA-AECO strives to provide a united voice for students at all levels of the education system. The Board of Directors fulfills an imperative role in ensuring a unified, inclusive voice for the students of Ontario.

As per the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act, “the Board of Directors is accountable to the members. It is responsible for managing, and supervising the activities and affairs of the corporation.” In this way, the Board of Directors has the fiduciary duty to oversee and advise the Executive Council in all operational activities to align short-term goals with the long-term vision of the organization.

The Board of Directors maintains internal policies and procedures that promote and sustain fiscal management, accountability, risk mitigation, long-term sustainability, and social responsibility. As a publicly funded not-for-profit corporation, these procedures comply with not-for-profit corporate regulations and are designed to maintain transparent and equitable financial records in accordance with regulatory requirements.

In addition to these operational duties and responsibilities, the Board of Directors also facilitates the implementation of programs and events through the Student Trustee Alumni Network. Ranging from mentorship opportunities for Student Trustees to an annual Gala recognizing student achievement, the Board facilities a range of organizational initiatives.

The current Directors of the Board fulfilling a one-year term concluding on July 31, 2016 are as follows:

Last Name
First Name
Email Address
Director Unified Communications
Director Logistics
Director Alumni Relations
Director Alumni Relations

This current transitional period is the beginning of a promising future for the organization and the students of Ontario. I firmly believe that these organizational realignments will improve the internal operational efficiency of OSTA-AECO, allowing for Student Trustees to receive exceptional professional development experiences and providing the students of Ontario with an echoing, united voice.

On behalf of the Board, I look forward to the term ahead and what the future holds for the organization, the Student Trustees, and the students of Ontario.

Yours in education,

Jacob Pullia
Board of Directors

Alumni Profile: Stephan Telka

Stephan_Telka-1aI had the pleasure of serving as Student Trustee on the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland & Clarington Catholic District School Board (which I believe is the longest school board name in the province!) from 2000-2001, and was one of the founders of OSTA-AECO in the autumn of 2000, serving as the inaugural President of the English Catholic Board Council. During my time as Student Trustee, I focused on getting students more involved in board affairs. I established a Student Trustee advisory committee, comprised of student council representatives of each secondary school within the board, and made sure my contact information was in every single secondary school classroom across the board. I also spearheaded the creation of a sub-committee…continue reading on our Alumni Profiles Page!
